Why Am I A Member Of The Church Of Christ
Because It Was Founded On The Scriptural Foundation — The Deity Of Jesus Christ
No building or institution can be stronger than the foundation on
which it rests. The foundation is the key to the stability of any structure.
The Lord’s church is no exception to this rule. What is the foundation
of the church? In Matthew 16 Jesus asked His disciples, saying: “Whom do
men say that I the Son of man am?” (16:13). The disciples responded by
telling Jesus the claims of men in that day (v. 14). Jesus then asked:
“But whom say ye that I am?” (v. 15). Simon Peter spoke up and answered
the question: “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God” (v. 18).
Peter called Jesus “Christ” which means the predicted “Messiah.” Peter
confessed at that moment that Jesus is the Savior, and that He is the Son
of God. Jesus is the one about which the prophets had spoken for generations.
Jesus blessed Simon for his confession that God had revealed unto
him (Matthew 16:17); and continued with His famous statement: “And I say
unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock will I build my church;
and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (v. 18). What is this
rock upon
which the church rests? Some would claim that the rock is Peter
himself. It is interesting to note
that Peter’s name in the Greek language means “rock,” but this is
not the same Greek word that is translated “rock” in Matthew 16:18. The
foundation (or rock) of the church is NOT the apostle Peter.
Even others would claim that Jesus was referring to the spot where
they stood at the moment. Yet, Matthew 16:28 indicates that the church
was not yet established and would not be established until after Christ’s
resurrection. The foundation of the church is that which Peter confessed
— Jesus is
the Christ, the Son of God! The Bible indicates that this is a tried
foundation (Isaiah 28:16), and apostolic foundation (Ephesians 2:19-20),
and an exclusive foundation (1 Corinthians 3:11). The foundation is not
a human being, nor is it a specific place on the earth; but it is the sinless
Son of God (Hebrews 4:15). Christ’s resurrection forever settled the matter
(Romans 1:4). Man-made religions will fall, but the deity of Jesus Christ
is a firm foundation that proves the church will never fall.
