Q. Over the past few year I have noticed throughout our brotherhood that some ministers have been using the title (Dr) Doctor in front of their names. Please help me to understand what has changed since Pentecost. In studying the scriptures I see NO mention of Peter, Paul, Timothy, etc.. has ever used that title. What is happening in our brotherhood? Has Diothrephes arose from the grave and giving some of our brethrens the preeminence according to 3 Jh 9 Prayerfully, Joyce
A. You have made an interesting observance. As we both know, the title is a description of the level of education they have completed. The problem comes in, as I believe you have referred to, when the title becomes a form of exaltation and some think of themselves more highly than they ought. I appreciate you comments and God bless.
Q. I and some friends were having a discussion about the book of LEVITICUS. Why are some of gods laws followed and quoted from that book in today's World, and others are ignored. If I read the book right, I'm not allowed to trim my beard, but I'm allowed to own slaves from Canada or Mexico. I think slavery was a black eye in our history. But I'm at a crossroads on this subject.
A. You have asked a great question. The answer has to
do with the difference between the Old Covenant and the New. Christians
today are under the New. Anything that He brings over from the old
law would apply to us today. The Bible says that:
The Old Testament was fulfilled by Jesus (Mt
5:17)
The Old Testament was faulty (Heb 8:7)
The Old Testament has been taken away (Gal 3:24-
25) (Eph 2:15)
2 Cor 3:6 - man in under the new
3:14 - old law was done away
Heb 10:9 - Christ took away the first covenant
So we live under the law of Christ. The things which Christ
restates from the old are the only things we onbserve. We do not
live under the old law. Study from that perspective. Some wonder
then what good is the Old Testament. Well, Rom 15:4 says it was written
that we might have hope. 1 Cor 10:11 says that the things that happened
were written to be examples.
Q. I attend a baptist church and recently stepped down as chairman deacon because I felt uncomfortable with decisions made by my pastor concerning finances of the church. The issues were: pastor's wife as signer on the church checking account; the pastor's brother in law receiving monthly wages when he is no longer able to do the job (he had a major stroke 05/06); pastor's daughter collects and in charge of annual pastor and wife appreciation; we (deacons & church) never vote on any matters concerning the church; the pastor never discusses with chairman deacon nor deacons on any changes concerning the church; only his relatives are in key positions in the church (i.e. musician; choir director; mothers board; usher; trustees(2). I was replaced as chairman deacon by his brother in law (yes the one who had the stroke). Tell me what is the order of how a church is to managed. And no we do not follow the by laws or roberts rules of order.
A. I think you can see that having one man in charge is a problem.
I am not a pastor or overseer, I am a preacher/ evangelist. Having
one man in charge elevates that man to a position equal to the "Chief Shepherd."
God set up His church to be overseen by elders/pastors/bishops/overseers/shepherds.
All these terms describe the same position. Each term is descriptive
of the role that man has. Notice the plural. Take note of 1
Peter 5:1-4. Every time Christians were admonished to appoint elders
in the church, it is used in the plural. Reason = the more minds,
the better the result.
Deacons, as described in 1 Tim 3 are appointed
by elders to be in charge of different tasks. They serve or are ministers.
That is a dangerous situation the church you
are describing is in. Seems like a power struggle. I believe that
is why God set up the organization of the church the way that I have to
described. Hope this helps.
Q. Can I Baptise myself? Can I get Baptised by a friend? I Don't want to make a big deal about this i just found out i wasn't so i want to do this with just me and God and Jesus at home is it possible?
A. We don't find an example in the New Testament of anyone baptizing themself. It does not matter who baptizes you, so long as you understand why you are being baptized - for the remission of you sins (Acts 2:38).
Q. In 1 Peter 3:19 the Bible says that Jesus went and preached to the spirits in prison. Where was this prison and where did the sprits come from? Please give scripture for answers.
A. Some believe that this preaching was done between Christ's death and His resurrection while His spirit was seperated from His body (Acts 2:31). I can see that line of reasoning. But thinking also on the context may reveal what the actual meaning is. The text speaks of those who were disobedient during the days of Noah. At that time, they were in the flesh. It seems that the spirits were in under restraint as wicked beings as Peter is writing. A possibilty is that Noah, being a spokesperson for God, was the one doing the preaching, being an authorized agent for Christ - hence Christ was preaching.
There is no doubt that this text is a source for much controversy. But these are the two main views held. I am not aware of any other texts that speak of this event, so all we have to draw conclusions on is 1 Pet 3:18-20.
Q. jacob married his mothers brother" daughters which would be his cousin is the word cousin mentioned in the bible..someone told me they did not have a word for cousin so they called everyone brother or sister..??? can't go for that..
Q. I was sexually molested by my older step brother when i
was
about 8. I had only told one person about this before and never
made it known to my family until here recently. About a year ago i told
my family and everything blew up. My brother denied it and now refuses
to speak to my family. It has really torn up my DAd.i feel so bad about
tearing apart my family, but it had to come out. i am just sorry that it
took so long. i am now having trouble with dealing with all of it. I am
glad that it has now come out and my family knows. What does the bible
say about all of this and how do I go about trying to forgive him?
A. Forgiveness is going to be a critical part to your healing. You have had things bottled up for so long that I am sure there is a lot of hurt and resentment inside you. But it is about moving forward. Forgiveness will allow you to take off the weight and will inable you to move on, leaving the past behind. There is one passage that always sticks out when looking at forgiveness. Mt 6:14 - "For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you."
Q. HOW CAN I TELL IF MY PREACHER IS A FALSE PROPHET I REALLY THINK HE IS BY THE WAY HE PREACHS AND THE THINGS HE SAYS IT DOESNT LINE UP WITH THE BIBLE.
A. Sounds like you already recognize him to be a false teacher. You basically have answered the question yourself. The way you tell is by what he teaches. Mt 7:20 says you will know them by their fruits.
Q. What does the bible say about marrying the person you commited adultry with? Can they still be saved?
A. Lk 16:18 - "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divored from her husband commits adultery." In order to be saved, God calls upon all men everywhere to repent (Acts 17:30). In order to repent, one must change their attitude toward the sin and then they continue no longer in the sin. To repent here would be to get out of the relationship. To stay with the person that one commits adultery with is contrary to God's will.
Q. I would like to know what does the Bible say about someone committing adultry, even after they confess their sins? Are they going to be allowed in Heaven? Where in the Bible can I find my answer. My dad and I have a different view on this. I say, if someone commits adultry and ask forgiveness of their sins and never do it again, they will be judge for their sins and it will be up to our Lord and Savior where that person should go. My dad says, those sins can never be forgiven, and that person will spend eternity in Hell. Can you please help? Maybe, there is just something I just don't understand.
A. All you need do is read Jn 8:1-12 and you will see that an adulterous person can be forgiven when they choose to "go and sin no more." No where does it say that one cannot obtain forgiveness for adultery - but take note that it must be repented of
Q. What do you think about interracial marriage? Im doing a page that is for it but I would like to know what you think.
A. There is nothing wrong with interracial marriage. I hear a lot about how people say that it's a source for gossip and draws undue attention. The fact of the matter is that race is not the issue when it comes to the teachings of the New Testament. The important matter is that both be believers (2 Cor 6:14).
Q. does it say any where in the king james version that interracial relationships are a sin?
A. No
Q. What does the Bible say about suiside?
A. There are several times in the Scriptures that people ended there own lives. Saul (1 Sam 31:4) fell on his own sword. Ahithophel (2 Sam 17:23) hanged himself. Zimri (1 Kings 16:18) burned down the king's house with himself inside. The most commonly known example though is of course Judas (Mt 27:3-5). But all of these are examples of people who made the mistake by giving up. Look at how Peter denied Christ 3 times, was filled with guilt, yet wept bitterly and repented (Lk 22:62). He could have given up, but he didn't.
Q. Where in the Bible does it talks about the occasion of Deacon
Day?
A. The Bible does not speak of a "Deacon Day"
Q. Why did only one boy have a lunch when Jesus fed the 5000?
A. Interesting question. Answers as to why no one else had anything to eat would be speculation. But we do know this. Jn 6:6 says that Christ knew what He was about to do. This was another one of the signs that He did which confirmed to the people that He was truly from God.
Q. WOULD YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN EPH.4.8
A. This verse is a quotation of Psm 68:18 with Paul making a slight modification. The verse gives the impression of Christ being the mighty conqueror. The phrase "led captivity captive" is a metaphor that is one of Paul's favorites. Through Christ we have been released from the captivity of death and sin. The gifts given have reference to vs 11-12. I would also refer you to Heb. 2:4. When He ascended, the Spirit was poured out (Acts 2) and to each was given the miraculous gifts of the Spirit. They confirmed what was being taught. In 1 Cor 13:8-13 we see when those miraculous gifts ceased. The "that which is perfect" has reference to the completion of the full revelation of God = the Bible. It does not say "He who is perfect". Therefore it is not speaking of the second coming of Christ as being when the miraculous gifts would cease.
Q. In Timothy Chapter 1 verse 20, What does that mean,? And how can Paul deliver, a city, or person to hell, or Satan?
A. "Delivering one over to Satan" is also found in 1 Corinthians 5:5 where it is speaking of a man who is sexually involved with his father's wife. In this case, the church was to carry out the delivering one over to Satan. What was the purpose? It goes back to vs 2 where it is speaking of not keeping fellowship with such a one. And vs 9-13 which speak of not keeping company with the immoral brother. This is parallel to Paul not keeping fellowship with the men in 1 Tim 1:20. There is some debate over the phrase "deliver over to Satan." Some have suggested that this was a apostolic power peculiar to the apostolic era where they could inflict bodily suffering. I am not confident that one can be for certain as to the exact meaning of the phrase. The purpose of both instances, though, is clear. That is to purge out the immoral influences from within the body.
Q. I have a issue about Gambling? Could you tell me where in the Bible it talks about Gambling being a sin. Alot of people say its not in the Bible, Is it wrong?
A. Gambling is wrong and for many reasons. God expects us to be good stewards with what He has given us ( 1 Cor 4:2). Taking chances with what God has blessed us with is definitely not being a good steward. Gamblers also seek for others to lose, while in return he wants to win. This is covetousness (Lk 12:15). We could list the numerous sins that are associated with gambling and look at all the false hope that comes from it. We could look at passages that tell us we are to work for what we have (2 Thess 3:10-13). Look at the driving forces of gambling: covetousness, laziness, and recklessness. How could it not be wrong?
Q. What was the name of Jesus 4 brothers?
A. Mk 6:3 - "Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon?"
Q. The significance of the three questions Jesus asks Paul in John 21
A. I assume you are referring to the 3 questions Christ asked Peter in John 21:15-17. Christ asked Peter 3 times "Do you love Me more than these?" There is something interesting about each statement. The first 2 times, Jesus asks Peter "Do you "agape" me?" Agape meaning an unconditional love. Peter responds using the word phileo for love, which means a love as friends share. Finally on the 3rd time Christ asks Peter "Do you "phileo" me?" I see the significance being that Peter had denied Christ 3 times, and he could not bring himself to tell Jesus he loved him unconditionally.
Q. Pl. can u tell me did Judus receive the 30 pieces of silver before the last supper or after?
A. I am under the impression that Judas received the 30 pieces of silver before the last supper. In Mt 26:15-16 the chief priests counted out to him thirty pieces of silver before the supper. In Lk 22:5-6 it says that they were glad and agreed to give him (Judas) money. Again taking place before the supper. Then after Judas betrayed Jesus, he becomes remorseful and returns the money. Mt. 27:3 is the verse that leads me to believe he received the money when he consulted with the chief priests before the supper. "...brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders." The only time I find Judas with the chief priests and elders was prior to the last supper.
Q. What does Galatians 6:1-5 mean? Explain verse 2 and verse 5 inthe above passage.
A. The first of the chapter begins with a command to go out and restore the sinful, while also looking out for yourself so that you won't become entangled in sin. To some, vs 2 & 5 seem to be a contradiction, but they are not. In vs 2, Paul is making reference to the fact that Christians should bear each others sorrows that are due to sins or misfortunes. While in vs 5 he is teaching that each man has to bear his own responsibility - referencing "his own work" found in vs 4.
Q. Where in the Bible does it say you shall not add or take away from this book?
A. It's found in Deut 4:2, and there is also a similar statement found in Deut 12:32 - speaking of keeping God's commandments
Q. I married a non believer and have since divorced him because
I was told that my marriage was wrong. If I find someone in the church,
can I
marry again? Also, is it true that the churches of Christ
can not join
with denominations to help others in a national disaster like Katrina?
My pastor says no but it was okay for our congregation to send money to
the Red Cross but not to the Salvation Army.
A. Concerning the previous marriage. The only grounds for a Scriptural divorce and remarriage is found in Mt 19. That is sexual immorality or adultery. You may have previously been married to a nonbeliever, but in 1 Pet 3:1 the believing wife is to live in good conduct, hoping that by the way she lives her husband might obey the gospel. So, unless your previous husband was unfaithful, you cannot remarry Scripturally. Concerning organizational support. We, the churches of Christ, do not pool together funds with denominations. We do, however, cooperate with other churches of Christ. During Katrina, I know our congregation gathered goods along with other churches of Christ and took them to a church of Christ in south Miss. Then they in turn distributed the goods, doing this in the Lord's name and in the name of His church. The Red Cross is a governmental relief agency that has the ability to aid people in massive disasters. There is nothing wrong in supporting this agency if one chooses. On the other hand, the Salvation Army is a religious body. Many don't realize that when they send funds to this organization, they are supporting a religious group and in essense saying they fellowship them along with their teachings.
Q. I have a question about Luke 19:27. What exactly does
the verse mean? Is Jesus advocating execution of the unfaithful?
This kind of verse could set off crusades and inquistions if not
regarded in the proper context.
A. In vs. 27, Christ is dealing with the unfaithful servant. This is similar to Mt 25:30 where Jesus says, "And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." Jesus is not advocating an earthly execution of all the unfaithful. Both instances refer to the wrath of God toward the unfaithful at the final judgment. You indeed are correct in saying that there must be proper regard for context.
Q. Can A man become a pastor after divorce?
A. The terms pastor, elder, bishop, overseer, and shepherd are synonomous in the New Testament. Each describe the same position or role in the church. The qualifications for such are set forth in 1 Timothy 3:1-7. In this passage we read that he is to be the "husband of one wife." There are several different interpretations surrounding this. Some say it only applies to polygamy, while others say he is to have never been divorced. But I think looking at the preceding qualification will help us. "A bishop then must be blameless." This does not mean he is perfect or sinless. But it would be hard to find obvious sinful faults within this man. So, wouldn't it be difficult for a man to be divorced, especially if it is an unscriptural one, and be blameless be one "who rules his own house well"?
Q. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PASTOR AND A PREACHER? AND THE DUTIES THEREOF?
A. The terms describe different roles that each have. Actually though, a pastor can preach, and a preacher can be an elder. The problem is that many see the preacher as "the pastor" and that one man makes the decisions for their church. Pastor, elder, bishop, overseer, shepherd are all terms that describe the same role or position in the church. In 1 Pet. 5:1-4 there is a good descrition of the role of elders. But notice something else. In the passage it is "elders". In congregations there were multiple elders/ pastors who would oversee the church.
Q. When I was married to my husband he was a faithful Christian, but sadly he has walked away from God. Soon after, my husband divorced me saying we were too different. I did not want to get divorced as I did not believe in it and I refused to sign papers. Still, the divorce went through. Because my husband was not sexually unfaithful to me during marriage, am I forbidden to marry again? If so, I will abide by that. I just want to be sure.
A. I am sorry about your situation, but am thankful for your interest in doing what is right. Christ's teaching concerning the matter is pretty clear. Mt 19:9 - "And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery." From the info you have given me, even though you tried to do the right thing all along and not get divorced, you should remain unmarried in your service to the Lord.
Q. Does the qualification of an elder,"husband of one wife', mean one woman for a life time or can an elder have been divorced from an unfaithful wife, remarry and still meet the qualification? Can an elder who lost his wife to death remarry and still meet the qualification?
A. The question is an excellent one, but is somewhat controversial in nature. As you look at the list of qualifications, there is one that sticks out, "blameless" or "above reproach". A second marriage is not dishonorable, so far as the previous seperation was a scriptural one (death of the other or sexual immorality commited by the other). If in the marital relationship anything brought about reproach, then that would disqualify him. Again, we're talking about a passage that has all kinds of interpretations surrounding it. I think what's important is to look at whether or not an action brings about reproach and is reprehensible.
Q. I AM WONDERING IF THERE IS CERTAIN THINGS YOU HAVE TO DO TO GET GOD TO ANSWER YOUR PRAYERS IN YOUR FAVOR?
A. For one, in order for God to answer your prayers they must
be heard by Him. God does not hear sinners (Jn. 9:31; Isa. 1:15;
59:1-2; Prov.
15:29) We must be in a right relationship with Him if we expect
to have our prayers answered. We should always take our concerns
to Him in prayer, but with the understanding that His answer may not be
what we wanted, but is what He sees best for us.
Q. What does religion mean to you?
A. In the Bible we read of vain religion (Mt. 15) and also pure and undefiled religion (James 1:27). There term religion carries different meanings. To me, the first thing that comes to mind is that it is the beliefs and practices associated with worship.
Q. I can't seem to beat this drug addition, and I'm killing my mother for it, I'm startin to think if I just die now, it might be hard for some time, but there will be no new pain. let me know if you thin that's logical.
A. I am sorry that you are struggling with such a difficult thing. You have taken care of the first couple of steps in acknowledging that you have a problem and then also reaching out for help. There is no doubt that all of us go through difficult times. Sometimes we can't see how things could get any worse. But there is always hope. I has a friend who at one point in his life was addicted heavily to cocaine. He was the only person at this particular place for rehabilitation to admit himself. Today he is enjoying life because of that decision. I strongly suggest you seek out the help of a professional. You can overcome this problem. Always remember that in times of difficulty you can rely on God.
Q. In Matthew 15:24 Christ tells a non-Jewish woman that he was only sent for the lost sheep of Israel. What does this mean for the non-Jewish people does God see non-Jewish people differently and possibly judges them differently?
A. The statement was made in response to His disciples urging Him to send her away. It is true that His ministry was largely focused on the Jews, although there are similar examples to the one where Christ reached out to the Samaritan woman at the well (Jn. 4). The answer to your question is no, God doesn't see people or judge differently based on whether Jew or Gentile. According to Gal.3:28, it was Christ that broke down that barrier between Jews and the Greeks, making them one in Him. As far as judgement, all men are amenable to Christ's law (Acts 17:30-31).
Q. 1. Did Jesus know that Judus Iscariot would betray Him when he chose him? 2. If so why do you think he chose him? 3. If His life and death were planned, do you think that Judus was forgiven for this act of treason and premitted to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven? Not to mention the fact that he committed suicide which is committed a sin to some.
A. Can God foreknow events that will take place and yet allow man to have the free-will to make his own choices? It's a complex thought because we're talking about an infinite and divine God. Yes, God allows us to make our own choices, yet He knows all events before they take place. 1. Because of this idea of foreknowledge, I would say yes. We know for a fact that He knew when He instituted the Lord's Supper (Lk. 22:21). 2. I could only speculate. 3. Did God remove choice from Judas' life? I don't think so. It was greed that led Judas to do what he did (Mt. 26:15). Peter chose to deny Christ 3 times. That was his choice. Peter repents, whereas Judas hangs himself. I cannot answer as far as where Judas' eternity is spent.
Q. We are a non-denomination small 30-50 people. Our church started out as a Sunday School and about 20 or so years ago was turned into the church it is now. We have a constitution and by-laws, which states voting membership in the church. We are down to 11 voting members as our deacons have not promoted membership in our church due to the fact that our pastor does not believe it is biblical. However, he said he would subscribe to the by-laws and it would not be a problem. He preached 3 sermons on Membership or should I say non- membership and Leadership in a church. He stated he would like to change the by laws to reflect a more biblical approach to our church. Ok, now we had 3 Deacons 1-died and now 2- have left the church. We now have the pastor as our sole Leadership and he said that he needed time to reflect and to think on this and that he would have something written up by the end of summer. Well this will be Nov. before we get any new leadership in the church. Was this wrong for our pastor to preach on non-membership without talking to the voting members of the church. Also he has a problem with water baptism. We have had one in all these years and he refused to baptise a 10 year old girl. He said it child baptising is not in the bible. I know that God is in control of this situation but I feel really sad that our Deacons have left and the way this has all come about. Prayerful praying
A. Let's look at each item you have brought up and see exactly what the Bible says. The first thing I would ask myself is "What's my ultimate authority, by-laws or the Bible?" If something in the by-laws conflicts the Bible, then I am going to follow the Bible. Concerning membership to the church, there is not one place in the entire Bible where people are added to the church by voting on them. It is the Lord who adds members to His church (Acts 2:47). You also say you have one "pastor" making the decisions for the church. "Pastor", "elder", "overseer", "shepherd", and "bishop" all describe the same role of leadership in the church. Notice 1 Peter 5:1-4 where it talks about the "elders who are among you." In the first century church there were multiple shepherds within each congregation. To have one man making decisions elevates that person to be like the "Chief Shepherd" (1 Pet. 5:4). Concerning water baptism, if a person can believe and repent of their sins (notice the order in Acts 2:38 and Mark 16:16) then they can be baptized in water for the remission of their sins. If I were you, I would be extremely concerned listening to someone who doesn't preach water baptism. According to the Bible, it is essential when preaching Jesus and in salvation. Notice Mk. 16:15-16, Acts 2:38, Rom 6:1-6, 1 Pet. 3:21. Thanks for your interest in seeking what the Bible has to say. God bless!
Q. WHAT IS THE PUROPSE OF MOTHERS IN THE CHURCH.
A. According to Titus 2:1-5, in keeping with sound teaching, young women/ mothers are "to love their husbands, to love their children,, to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed.
Q. 2Corinthians 12:1-6 Can you explain the three heavens that Paul is refering to and what it is he is saying? There are times that Paul's writings confuse me, this is one of those times.
A. This is the only time "the third heaven" occurs in the New Testament. There is no certainty about what is meant. Some teach the three heavens are (1) The sky where the clouds gather (Gen. 2:1,19) (2) the firmament which contains the sun, moon, and stars (Deut. 18:3; Matt. 24:29) and (3) God's eternal dwelling place (Matt. 5:12, 16, 45, 48)
Q. What is the differance between a Deacon and a Church Elder?
A. A deacon is a servant. In Acts 6:1-7, men were chosen to make sure that none of the widows were missed when it came to the distribution. They are in a position to make sure that the service the church renders gets carried out. They are, though, under the oversight of the elders. Elder, bishop, shepherd, overseer, and pastor all describe the same role. In 1 Pet. 5:1-4 we see that the elders (notice plural) are to lead by example and lead or shepherd the church.
Q. i want to know how important it is to go to church,i have gotten out of it and as bad as this may sound it has always been boring to me and i never felt like i got anything out of it,is it a sin not to go? and will i not be able to be close to god if i dont go?
A. I'm glad that you asked and are concerned about your spiritual well-being. The church we read of in the Bible was extremely focus on assembling together. We know that they were together daily - eating, praising God, and teaching others (Acts 2:46-47). We know they assembled on the first day of the week to gather in communion and partake of the Lord's Supper (Acts 20:7). Scripture teaches us that we are to assemble together. Notice the another purpose in Heb. 10:23-25. We gather to stir up love and good works. To encourage one another until Christ returns. Verse 25 says not to forsake the assembling of the church. You do need to assemble with the church because Scripture teaches us to assemble, worship God, and exhort one another. Always remember that you get out of worship what YOU put into it. God never purposed for worship to be entertainment. It is you gathering with others to worship.
Q. I need some help with clearing this up, Im really confused about the unforgivable ive been told by different people that its Rejecting Jesus Christ at the Holy Spirits revealing he is the savior or that its attributing the Miracles of Jesus Christ to satan. While the latter is really bad is it unforgivable? What would make it unforgivable I can see how rejecting Christ becomes unforgivable but what about the other im really confused what do you think.
A. Your question is in reference to Mt. 12 where Christ had cast out a demon and the Pharisees had accused Him of doing it by the power of Satan. So based on this text, that is what is being taught here as the unforgivable sin. It is blasphemy because they were attributing the power that Christ had demonstrated to the devil, instead of being done by the power of God. You are right in your thinking, but in this context it is talking about the miracle of Christ.
Q. I read one of the Questions asked to you about Women Preaching and your answer was not in front of men can you tell me why do you say that? Is that somewhere in the Bible?
A. The role of women is discussed in 1 Cor. 14:34-35 and also 1 Tim. 2:11-14. God tells us that men are to take the leadership role. That is His design and plan for the church. - Chris Miller
Q. Tell me if salvation is a free gift and you are saved by
grace, what can you personally do to earn the right to this free gift.
Nothing is free if conditions are placed on it. If I told you I would give
you a house free but you were not allowed to have visitors while you live
in it, then it isn't really yours freely. Because I have put conditions
on it, if it were truly your free gift then you could do with it as you
choose. When they asked Jesus in the Book of John 6:28 Then
said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?
Jesus replied in the next verse:
Joh 6:29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work
of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.
I know that the book of James states that faith without works
is dead, but what James truly meant ( I think) is if you have truly been
saved, then the new man will desire to do the Lord's will and this will
be evident by the fruit he produces, if he confesses salvation but bears
no fruit except bad fruit, or if he only endures for a short while then
chances are he NEVER really repented, he only eased his guilty mind and
had a emotional experience, not a spiritual one.
So my question is what can you do besides repenting and believing
on Jesus Christ that will allow you to earn salvation? What works can you
justify yourself by?
A. We can't earn our salvation. What you are refering to is faith, but not just any faith - it is a working faith or an obedient faith.
Q. I recently read Rabbi Kushner's book When Bad Things Happen to Good People. I understand his logic on free will and how prayer shouldn't be about asking for things like God is Santa. He mentions that he prays for patience, wisdom, and understanding before he counsels his patients. My question is how can you distinguish from the two types of prayers? You are still asking for something whether it is pious or selfish. If Kushner is not "asking" but praying that he will be patient and understanding then doesn't prayer become meditation? I understand that their is a differnece between how and why you ask for something during prayer (i.e., selfish versus praying for God's will). Perhaps I shouldn't be looking for something absolute (asking is asking regarless of how or why you ask) because if we can't ask then all we can do is thank and praise Him and He might get tired of that.
A. I have not read that specific book, but understand what you are asking. Take a look at the model prayer found in Matt. 6. There seems to be a balance between praise to God, following His will, and on taking care of our needs. I don't think it is an act of selfishness to humbly acknowledge that you need God's help. Take a little time to look up "pray" or "prayer" in your concordance and look at each verse that deals with it. I think you'll be amazed at all the things that were taken before God.
Q. if you ask god to forgive you for your sins and you dont turn away from that sin and continue to repeat and keep asking for forgiveness for the same sin will god keep on forgiving you or will he turn away until you are ready to really ask for forgiveness and mean it?
A. Well to be honest, the unrepented sin is unforgiven. Now someone can repent, and later be tempted and fall short, then repent and ask God's forgiveness and be forgiven.
Q. What is the sin that will not be forgiven? I think it is
blasphemy
against god,but i would like to know for sure.
A.What you are referring to is found in Mt. 12:31-32. Many refer to blasphemy against the Holy Spirit as the "unpardonable sin." Chris Miller
Q. What prophet was slapped in the Bible
A. 2 Chronicles 18:23 - Micaiah
Q. When Judas betrayed Jesus, it seems like it was a play, and all the characters had to be in place. Didn't Judas have to betray Jesus for the crucufiction to take place?
A. Judas was free to make a choice. But because Christ foreknew that He would be betrayed by one of His own, the events that happened took place. Judas could have chosen to do the right thing.
Q. My question is if u are doing a special program at church and the pastor tries to run everything for example the songs that the choir sings or the step team.IS it right for him to do everything and let the people who want to particapate in coming up with ideas for the program sit back and watch?
A. It sounds like where you attend that one man is trying to run the church. That elevates him, in essence, to be equal with the "Chief Shepherd". It is not right for one man to run a congregation and make all the decisions for it. In the New Testament, we find that the "elders" (plural) would shepherd the church.(1 Pet. 5:1) In the church of Christ, we have multiple elders in each congregation that make decisions. They are open to any suggestions that the members have, but they are responsible for making the final decision.
Q. I am a member of the presbyterian church, yet lately i've felt such a strong desire to be baptized in a river, with my kids...would my pastor be insulted?
A. I seriously doubt any preacher would take offense to the request. Location of the water makes no difference. But the purpose of the baptism does. Baptism is for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38) and is where we are buried and raised to walk in newness of life (Rom. 6:1-6).
Q. Am I right in thinking that God uses foreknowledge to see who is going to accept him and then predetermine those very people?
A. Predestination in the sense that man is deprived of free-will is wrong. Otherwise, why would He command all men everywhere to repent (Acts 17:30). Did God predestine us from the standpoint we have no choice in the matter, or did He predestine a plan by which man whould be saved? Think about it, no free choice makes a mockery of the purpose of preaching.
Q. I received a booklet regarding The Da Vinci Code. I personally don't want to see the movie b/c I feel that is a farce, and I don't want any of my money to support it.
Anyway.... after looking at this booklet that's supposed to explain how and why the Da Vinci Code is wrong I'm even more confused. This is what it said, could you please explain what they’re talking about…
Constantine was a pagan and hated Jews and all of their religious practices, so he changed them. For example, Easter is a popular holiday but rooted in ancient springtime fertility celebrations. He didn't want to be associated with Passover, so he made up Easter in conjunction with his pagan upbringing meshing it with Christianity.
Also, his affection for sun worship had earlier led him to endorse Sunday, the first day of the week and a day dedicated to honoring the sun, as a weekly day of rest in the Roman Empire. He outlawed Christians to keep the Sabbath as the ancient ones of Biblical Holy Days did. We, as Christians should make a clear distinction between the sun-cult (Mithraism) and the true Christian rituals of the Bible. They held their services on Sunday, knelt towards the East. (I don’t know what Mithraism is, and it sounds like a bunch of craziness to me). It even went on to say that they had a "nativity-feast" on the 25th of December b/c it is the birthday of the sun at the winter solstice, and not Jesus birthday at all.
Finally, people get deceived after seeing a movie like The Da Vanci Code, and deception occurs when error is mixed with truth. It is our responsibility to explain the truth, and not to confuse people as many churches do. Many "Christian" practices are not biblical teaching...No wonder the great mother Church is called "Babylon", since the Hebrew word for Babel or Babylon means confusion. After the Reformation (which I don't know what the Reformation is) daughter churches were expunging wrong practices and traditions that were originated in paganism and myths. Paul warned us of false apostles, and deceitful workmen disguising themselves of apostles of Christ...do not be deceived yourself. Know the real truth of the Bible. It makes no mention of Easter, Christmas, or even tells the date of Jesus birth.
Please remember, I don't feel this way...this is just what I was given, and now I'm really confused. Could you recommend any good books or information that would explain these things a little bit better? The next time they knock on my door I’d like to explain the truth to them. Thank you in advance for your help.
A. It sounds like you had a Seventh - Day Adventist visit you.
They are a militant group in teaching and wrong in many teachings.
However, as far as reliable material dealing with the Da Vinci Code, I
know of none at this time.
Q. During the Last Supper Jesus had all his Disciples together
and knew that one of them would betray him. Judas betrayed Jesus for twenty
pieces of silver. My question is "Didn't the people already know where
Jesus was if he were preaching in the city?"
A. The people did know that Jesus had been in the city. In Mt. 24:1, He had been in the temple. In vs. 3, He took His disciples to the Mount of Olives to teach them privately. In Mt. 26:4, the religious leaders wanted to take Him and kill Him subtly, but did not for fear of a mob arising because of the day being a feat day. So yes, people had known that He had been amongst them. Judas had become greedy and was willing to sell out Jesus. Christ knew that one of His own followers would be the one to deliver Him over to the hands of the Jews. (webmaster's note: the price was actually thirty pieces of silver)
Q. 1 Thessalonians 4:16 "and the dead in Christ will rise first." I understand that the dead in Christ are those who were believes in Chist and have died. But can you explain what is meant by "they will rise first"? Are they not in heaven now? I guess I do not understand the process of the rapture. Can you explain this to me?
A. There is much confusion amongst the religious world concerning
the "Second Coming." You are correct in stating that those who are
faithful Christians who died, up until Christ's return, will rise first.
This would include myself if I died today and Christ returned tomorrow.
I am, though, concerned about the term "rapture." Many denominations
teach that when Christ returns, He will reign on the throne of David for
1000 years and Palestine will be returned to the Jews. They teach
that those who are faithful will be "raptured" and the unjust will remain.
The truth is the Bible speaks of the "day of the Lord." When He returns,
it will be unannounced and the earth will be burned up (2 Pet. 3:10-11).
The Lord will descend, the dead in Christ shall rise, and those who are
alive in Christ will be caught up into the air with Him. Then all
men will be gathered before His judgment seat (Mt. 25:31-33). For
further reading on the end times, check out "Did You Miss the Rapture?"
by Mack Lyon.
Q. Thank you for your reply. However, I'm still a little confused.
You refer to yourself dieing today and being raised tomorrow, if Jesus
came tomorrow. If you were to die today, - would you NOT go to heaven
today? And if you didn't, where would you be? Jesus told the
man next to Him on the cross, "Today you will be with me in paradise."
From that, I assumed we would go to heaven when we die. Yet 1 Thessalonians
refers to the dead in Christ being raised first. I hope you can understand
my confusion.
A. I do not see anywhere addressing a resurrection immediately after one's death. What we do know from this passage is that all the righteous will be raised at one time. Paul addresses this resurrection in 1 Cor. 15. Some believe in a waiting place for the dead, "paradise" and "torments" and then teach when Christ returns all will be taken to the judgement scene. We can look at all different angles when it comes to the end times, but in reality what matters is "Am I ready?".
Q. Where in the bible it says death is final and you will not be married in heaven to the person that you were married here on earth I had heard that theres no females or males in heaven is this true it in the bible some where.
A. The teaching of eternal marriage is popular amongst Mormons. Take note of the teaching found in Mt. 22:23-33 and Lk. 20:27-40. Jesus says there is no need for marriage in eternity. As far as different genders in heaven, there are no scriptures that would indicate that there even be a need for different genders in heaven. We do know that according to 1 Jn. 3:2, "we shall be like Him."
Q. Hello. I am writing in a question about marriage and divorce. I am divorced but very lonely. I want a girlfriend and possibly this will lead into another marriage, however I want to know if the Bible said anything on the subject of God will take your child if you get married again?
A. You do not say why you were divorced. Scripture teaches that if one divorces for any cause save fornication and marries again he commits sin (Matthew 19:9). Having said that, God does not take away children because of something parents do. I am guessing that you are suggesting that God would kill ones child if he married again. Death is a consequence of sin but it is not meted out directly on someone because of wrong doing.
Q. I have a question I need some understanding to. If my Pastor get in the pullpit to Preach and Teach to us every sunday at regular Church Service and Wednesday Night at Bible Study always make commits about people talking about him and I feel that he should not do that what should I do, also if I want to work in the Church and he say he is still praying about what he wants each member to do in the Church what do I do? I would like to give you example. He says to hand in to him in writting what you would like to do when it comes to a Program atleast 1 month ahead of time and you hand it in 2 months early with everything spelled out for him but you get no response from him what do you do? Help please give me some guidance I just want to work for the Lord.
A. The work of a preacher should be to preach the word and not center on himself or what people have had to say about him whether good or bad. Jesus Christ should be the center of his message and attention and not himself. I think that if I volunteered my services and indicated what I wanted to do if such went unnoticed for a period of time that I would consider changing congregations and go to one that would use me.
Q. Although it is true that there is only one Gospel, that is the Gospel of Grace as mentioned in Galatians chapters 1 and 2, is it not true also as claimed by the Judiazers that besides having faith in Jesus, obeying the laws, is also necessary as we were told in Matthew 19:17 (NIV) "If you want to enter life, obey the commandments"?
A. Though salvation is by grace (which we are under) this does not eliminate the need to be obedient to that which God has commanded. As for the passage in Matthew 19:17, it must be remembered that Jesus was trying to teach this young man the importance of sacrifice in order to obtain the salvation offered by Christ which indeed is by grace. But as you can see from the passage something is required in order to obtain it.
Q. I have recently found my soul mate. I do not use that term lightly. I truly believe God led us to each other. the question being, we have both been married before, and we need to know will a Church of Christ or Methodist preacher marry us? Both of our marriages ended on grounds of abandonment. We really want to know if our union can be recognized in the church. We feel it is very important and want to have a blessed spiritual union.
A. I am unable to speak for other preachers. I am guided by Matthew 19:9 and over a nearly 50 year ministry I personally decline to perform weddings for those who have been married before unless their previous spouse is dead or committed fornication against the party desiring to marry.
Q. Should women preach.
A. Not in the presence of men.
Q. What does it mean in 1 Thessalonians 4:17 when it says: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Does that not refer to the rapture?
A. No, this passage does not refer to the rapture for the Bible does not discuss such a thing. The rapture is merely a figment of some persons imagination. The passage is talking about when the Lord comes for the second time and how that there will be some of his people on the earth when he comes and what will happen to them. Notice it says "So shall we ever be with the Lord" not just for seven years as I believe the so-called rapture theory suggests.
Q. My daughter goes to a church that has a fellowship hall. The whole time she was growing up she attended a conservative church of Christ.Do you know of maybe a better way to convince her this is wrong?I worry about her and her family.Does the bible not teach we have houses to eat in?
A. The Bible does indeed ask if we do not have houses to eat in. But this does not mean this is the only place we can eat or else we could not have a picnic or eat in a restaurant. As to a church having a fellowship hall we must remember what the church is. The church is made up of those people who the Lord has added to his church, the saved if you will. The church is not a building. If you are asking should a church building have a fellowship hall in it this is another question. A part of the answer would be does it expedite the work of the church in evangelism, benevolence or edification. Thank you for your question.
Q. Hello, my church is going through a rough time right now. We have an interim pastor that has committed adultery 10 years ago while being a preacher then as well and we are suppose to vote him in on this coming up Sunday and I don't know what to think. If you can give me some scriptures or some helpful advice I would appreciate it a lot.
A. First there is no scripture for a church to vote a preacher in or out. Second, sounds like sin finally found the preacher out. If he truly repented then he was forgiven and previous actions should not be held against him if he did not he is unworthy of being in a pulpit.
Q. Where in the Bible can you find anything about suiside? What does God have to say about suiside?
A. The Bible does not address this topic very much. There are only a few suicides mentioned in the Bible and most of them were people who lived wicked lives. Usually I think we can say that because self preservation is one of our strongest traits one who does this is not in their right mind though there could be exceptions. All I know as to what God says about this is "Thou shall not kill or commit murder".
Q. SHOULD MEMBER IN THE CHURCH THAT ARE NOT SAVED DO COMMUNION?
PLEASE EXPLAIN
A. If they are members of the church and have not renounced
the faith how would we know whether they were saved or not? Obviously,
only members of the church should serve the communion or take it but we
have no way of knowing a persons heart.
Q. does the bible say anything any where as to what we all will be doing in heaven for ever and ever.
also i heard a teacher teach that all of us born are the ones that the devil forced to go with him when he was cast out during the first earth age. and that we are living in the 2nd earth age and given another chance.if this is so,can you document it.
A. In response to the first question it seems rather evident from reading Revelation 22:3 that in some way we will serve God.
Concerning the second question. I would be most interested in knowing the basis for such a conclusion. Such is not taught in the Bible.
Q. please reply.i'm not a regular church go'er.however i do
listen to teachers and preachers on TV all the time, but my question has
never arose. i have been saved for years, and my question may sound
strange but here goes, when God speaks to you or anyone how can you tell
it's him talking to you.?
whats the differance in his voice and your subconcience.? does he
speak to everyone thats saved.?
can you actually hear a voice.? if so i have never heard him
speak to me.
A. Thank you for your question. God does not speak to people directly today as he did in days gone by. Hebrews 1:1-2 teaches this clearly. God has given us all things to pertain to life and godliness in his word there is no need to speak directly to us today. His word furnish the man of completely. You might want to read these passages for further confirmation of what I have said, 1 Timothy 3:16-17 and 2 Peter 1:2-4.
Q. may I ask what bible u teach out of
A. I do my basic study from the King James version. Most of my preaching and teaching is also done from this version but I sometimes use the New King James Version. In studying the Bible I refer to a number of other versions but I think that a good Bible student will basically stay with one version and it is my conviction that two of the most reliable are the King James and the New King James.
Q. Pastor, does a new convert have to be
baptized before or she can take holy communion.
Please, tell me what does the Bilble say on this on this issue?
A. I believe you have some misunderstanding about conversion and baptism. One is not a Christian (convert) until after he is baptized. Jesus makes this plain in Mark 16:16 when he says he that believes and is baptized shall be saved. At Acts 2:38 it is clear that ones sins are not remitted until he has been baptized. As for taking the communion this is a privilege every Christian has according to Acts 2:42. No one has the right to withhold communion from another Christian each is to examine himself in this matter according to 1 Corinthians 11:28.
Q. 1 Kings chapter 3.
A. Where is the Bible scripture concerning a mother giving up her child to keep it from being cut in half and half given to each person wanting the child?
Q. does a woman have to take the last name of the person she marries?Or can she retain her (nee) name legally?
A. I cannot answer the legal aspect of your question you would need to consult a lawyer. I know of nothing in the Bible that requires a woman to take the last name of the person she marries except that marriage is a lifetime commitment and it seems to me that since the Bible also says that the husband is the head of the home and of the wife that if she doesn't take his name there is a conflict with what the Bible teaches.
Q. Good morning Pastor. It's me again. I have a question about Abraham ans Sarah. My wife was reading in Genisis and said that she read that Abraham and Sarah were really brother and sister. Is this true ?
A. Read Genesis 20:12.
Q. Do you believe in the Rapture? If so can you explain it.
A. No, I do not believe in the rapture. There is no such thing taught in the Bible. It is simply the figment of fertile imagination of men though a lot of them have made money out of the idea.
Q. First of all, thank you for taking the time to answer the questions that so many of us have. My question is one that I am sure you get a lot of these days. Simply put, married when I was 19 years old. I was not baptised (nor was my husband). I sorely regretted getting married at all. I was not ready for such a committment. I committed adultery, divorced my husband and then did a lot of growing up. Several years later, I remarried and had two beautiful children. I have just recently begun assessing my life and the reality that I have to face my past. If I should decide to become a Christian, does that mean that I would have to divorce my second husband? I can find no clear answer on this. I do not want to hurt my children and tear our family apart. Thank you.
A. Before I answer your question I need to say some things about becoming a Christian because I think this will help in your determination of what needs to be done in your situation.
The Bible teaches us that to become a Christian we must place our faith in Jesus Christ. This is more than a mere belief that he is the Son of God or God come in the flesh. It means that you take him as savior and because he is your savior you will do what ever he demands which requires a denying of self according to Matthew 16:24.
One must also repent of his sins. To repent is more than just being sorry for sins committed. It involves a determination not to follow that course of wrongdoing anymore but to follow Christ. A drunkard world stop his drinking, a liar would stop his lying and an adulterer would stop committing adultery.
When faith and repentance have occurred then one is ready to put the Lord on in baptism and become a Christian.
One of the terrible things about sin is that even after it has been committed and forgiven there are consequences that follow our wrongdoing. You state that you committed adultery in your first marriage. Adultery can be forgiven. People in the church at Corinth were forgiven of such according to 1 Corinthians 6:9-11. But they did not continue in that sin after they were forgiven because they had repented. According to Matthew 19:9 One who divorces for some cause other than fornication and marries again commits adultery and as long as they stay in that relationship they keep on committing adultery. Now based on what faith is and what repentance is and what these scriptures teach what do you conclude?
Yes, there are terrible consequences to wrong doing but remember to dollow Christ we must deny self.
Q. Where in theOld Testament do we find the verse concerning
Joseph, Mary and Jesus leaving Egypt,
and in the New Testament where this Old Testament passage is fulfilled.
A. Hosea 11:1 and Matthew 2:15.
Q. ISN'T WITHOLDING SEX CONSIDERED A SIN?
A. It is unless there is mutual consent according to 1 Corinthians 7:5.
Q. i would just like to know where i can find it in the bible about mixing races i know its there
A. If you find it let me know because I have never seen it in my studies.
Q. once you have salvation can you lose it??
A. Yes. Read Hebrews 6:4-6 and Hebrews 10:26. Also consider 1 Corinthians 10:12 and Galatians 5:4.
Q. what is the role of mother’s in a church why do they have mother’s board
A. I am sorry that I really cannot answer your questions. I personally never heard of a "mothers board". We strive to "speak where the bible speaks and be silent where it is silent" and I have never found where it speaks of "mothers boards" consequently I would conclude they are without Bible authority in the church. I can't say if this is unique to black culture or what because as stated I don't know anything about them except that the bible does not address the matter.
I do thank you for your question and your interest.
Q. How many times is the word "new" found in the Bible?
A. At this cite we concentrate on what the whole word says rather than how many times a given word appears. But get you a concordance and you can find out the answer to your question.
Q. No
A. Anywhere in the Bible, does it say that interracial dating/ marriage is wrong?
Q. I have heard the saying for years that in the end times you will not be able to tell one season from the next. I would like to know have you heard this saying, is it true, and where to find evidence of this in the Bible.
A. Yes, I have heard it too. And it is not true check Genesis 8:22.
Q. IF SOMEONE IS A DEACON OR DEACONESS AND THEY DRINK A LITTLE OR GO INTO THE BARS. SHOULD THEY BE SERVING AS A DEAON OR DEACONESS
A. no
Q. Sounds right to me.
A. Who in the bible became angry with God but did not sin?
The answer I found was Job, am I wrong?
Q. Before I married my husband, there were HUGE red flags...and I ignored them. I believed with God, myself and counseling he would change. It's my first time every being in love and I truly only wanted to see the good in this man which was his desire about God. He is doing the same old things he has done before. So he hasn't changed. I found pieces of another woman's articles, and one time, he had make up on his shirt (and it wasn't mine). He has decided to leave where we live now and move to another city and I choose not to leave because where I am residing is where I am truly being feed spiritually. I feel that he's trying to take me away from God, so I had to make a choice---GOD. I heard that abandonment is a scriptural ground for divorce is this true? He is emotional disrespectful and as stated afore, there are some articles i have that belongs to another one.
A. Usually it is said that abandonment is a cause for divorce based on some things said in 1 Corinthians chapter 7. Jesus, however made it clear that the only reason for divorce is sexual unfaithfulness (fornication) as found in Matthew 19:9. However the abandonment mentioned in 1 Corinthians 7 presupposes fornication and there is every indication from what you have said that your husband is indeed guilty of such.
Q. is it wrong in GOD'S Word for blacks to marry whites?
A. God's word does not address this matter. If the two parties are qualified for marriage by the Bible, race is not a factor.
Q. How many times is sex mentioned in the bible versus other topics such as murder, lying and stealing? I am trying to prove that the issue of sex is not as important as the topic of killing someone else or even having other gods before the real God, even though the topic of sex is treated as the most important rule in the bible. Don't get me wrong, I believe sex is a very important subject, I just feel that there are more important issues to address in this life and that sex should not be our number one concern.
A. Our number one purpose is to "fear God and keep his commandments" according to Ecclesiastes 12:13 That's true of his commandments concerning sex, murder or whatever.
Q. A young couple come to you and are living together and are having sex and want to be married in the Church. What do you tell them?
A. Tell them they should repent of their past sin then commend them for now wanting to do the right thing and marry them.
Q. Brother Cole,
In the 1940s did you preach in Columbia Tenn?
My Question.
Where does the Soul originate from? I believe it comes from
and goes back to God, but when and where does it enter the body, at conception
or birth or some other time. I'm not sure we have an answer given, but
I know that any body, including a baby, is dead if it has no soul.
Thank you,
A. No, I have preached in Columbia, Tennessee in meetings and the like but not in the 40's. While the Bible does not specifically say when the soul enters the body some passages seem to indicate that it enters at the point of conception.
Q. What does the Bible say about oral sex and what is your opinion on the matter?
A. The Bible does not address this subject other than sex is to between husband and wife. My opinion on this or any other matter is not important. The thing that is important is what the Bible says.
Q. Who can admisinter communion. I say only a member of the clergy. Am I correct?
A. The Bible makes no distinction in clergy and laity. If you are a Christian you are a part of a special priesthood according to 1 Peter 2:9. In the assembly of the church where the communion is served it would be by any Christian though if it a mixed assembly (men and women) then a man should serve because of the teaching of 1 Timothy 2:12.
Q. may a catholic who divorces and remarries recieve a catholic funeral mass?
A. I am not a Catholic and am unable to speak as to what they believe or practice. You would have to ask one of their offcials.
Q. Hi
i am pastor in guntur state ap in india about
last 10 years. i got so many answers in the bible.but i having one critical
doubt BIBLE.
1) in the bible 40+ writers are writing the bible.they
all are inspired by god like dreams, visions, revelation.prophets see god
why they not ask god about his orders or why they not suggest god about
their opinions.why they not ask more friendly with god like why this is/why
that is/what is this/what is that/what is your plan and what is this result/why
you do these things/what is need or benifit of these things
/Tell me why you hide some secrts /and clear all of my doubts one
by one.
2)Why god not tell much about his origin or his creatin of events
before earth, only small picture of angels in heaven and very little bit
of satan rebelltion with god and fall was telling in bible.
3)i think god telling above events that is one book is more enough.why
god not tell all of our douts while he inspired by authours,Any way he
is know we had so many doubts are arouse in our minds ,
Why god not telling bible like a simple story
and explaing himself allready prepared what we have felt douts in our minds
and he is writing like, he is asking questions like ours and explaing
his answers in his books clearly.so all are easily understnd himself and
no questions about anything.
4)Why only one way explantation (or) one way conversation
in the bible than both sides mutually understands the conversations.
A. God's ways are not our ways nor his thoughts our thoughts. Further it needs to remembered that the secret things belong to God. While it is true the Bible was written by some 40 different men taken together it forms one great message namely: "someone is coming, someone has come and someone is coming again." It is much better organized than any of the so-called sacred books of other religions. I encourage you to continue to read and study the Bible and accept it for what it says.
Q. I USE WINE IN MY COMMUNION AT HOME IS IT WRONG
A. The communion is to be observed by Christians in the assembly on the Lord's Day not in the home. The word "wine" as used in the Bible may refer to either grape juice or fermented wine most often that can easily be determined as to which from the context of a given passage. And while fermented wine is not forbidden in the communion for a number of reasons it would be far more expedient to use simple grape juice.
Q. A WOMAN STARTED GOING TO CHURCH IN MY CHURCH....BAPTIST CHURCH....THE CHURCH OF CHRIST PREACHER WENT TO HER HOME AND TOLD HER THAT IF SHE WENT THERE SHE WAS BOUND FOR HELL...IS THAT NOT JUDGING AND IS THE CHURCH OF CHRIST THE ONLY WAY TO HEAVEN ....
A. First let me say I am not a Church of Christ preacher. I am a gospel preacher who seeks to declare what the Bible teaches. Secondly, the Bible teaches me that Jesus Christ is the savior not the church. The church is made up of those who are saved. According to 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9 the ones going to Hell are those who have not obeyed the gospel. The gospel consists of facts to be believed and commands to be obeyed. We must believe that Jesus died for our sins, was buried and raised again the third day. The commands of the gospel may be read at Acts 2:38 and Mark 16:16. People who have not been obedient to them are the ones who will be lost. That is not passing judgment that is simply what the Book teaches. We offer a free Bible correspondence course from this site and we would be happy to enroll you in it and perhaps some of these things might become more clear to you.
Q. Good morning Pastor. It has been said that the shepards were at the maanger and the wise men when they saw the baby Jesus he was in the house In Matthew it says the sheppards were at the Manger and in Luke it says that "and when they came to the house they saw the baby Jesus. Will you make it clear for me ?
A. I don't know what version of the Bible you are using but there is no mention of shepherds in Matthew's account in my Bible but there is in Luke and they didn't go into a house they went to the manger Luke 2:16. As for the wise men, they are mentioned in Matthew's account and it is obvious that they arrived some while after Jesus was born and by this time Mary, Joseph and the Christ child were in a house. Do not allow yourself to be deluded by nativity scenes and poems that men have concocted or Christmas pageants that have been performed but just follow the Biblical account
Q. It rained for forty days. Moses spent forty days on
the mountain. Elijah fasted for forty days. Jesus spent forty
days in the wilderness. Etc. Can you tell me the significance
of the number forty?
Thank you,
A. You are right the number 40 seems to be significant in the Bible and nearly always it is used as a figure for judgment or testing. Another example is when Jonah preached to Nineveh he told them if they did not repent within 40 days they would be destroyed.
Q. I have a friend who has committed adultery. She is a Christian, and has asked God for forgiveness. Her husband suspected that she had cheated, but she told him no. Does she need to confess her sin to her husband too?
A. Several matters should be considered here. First is she truly penitent. Second did her husband believe her? Generally the Bible seems to teach that sins ought to be as publicly confessed as they are publicly committed.
Q. Dear pastor,I have a question that i've been searching on the truth about and it's like this. I have a girlfriend of three years whom i truly love. I truly want to marry her but she's been married and divorced. My questions stem from Matthew 5:31-32 where JESUS says if a man marrys a woman who's divorce he commits adultery and will be considered a adulter. Well in my girls case her husband she married went outside the marriage and had kids on her and she stated this to me that she also after that went out and cheated also once she claims. She said they both admitted to there wrong and tried to work it out but he went out and got another child. So pastor if i was to marry this woman would i be a adulter or would GOD honour our marriage The only reason i know about her part was because she was honest enough to share it with me. So please pastor give me the truth and not some dogmatic are some comprimising truth. I don't want to stand before GOD as and adulter and i want my first marriage to be honoured before GOD.
A. I answered this I think in a previous e-mail and gave you
the situations where one would be able to marry. Based on the additional
information you supply here I must say that I do not think that the scriptures
would permit you to marry this woman without sin and yes, I believe they
teach that you would be committing adultery.
Q. Dear pastor i wrote you earlier about marrying my girlfriend i really want to know with the situation i explain to you would i be a adulter for marrying this woman. please let me know something before i make the biggest mistake of my life and mainly spiritual. I also read a question someone wrote about how did the old testament saints enter paradise, well my understanding is that Jesus said no one comes to the father but by me and with him still alive at the time they had to wait meaning the saints for Jesus to lead them to paradise. Look at the lost books of the Bible (nicodemus)
A. do not recall just what the situation was concerning your girlfriend as I receive so many questions. I will simply tell you what the Bible teaches and you can apply it to your particular situation. The Bible teaches that two people who have never been married may marry. It teaches that if both of them have been married before but both were divorced for the reason of adultery they may marry or if one has not been married and the other one has but they were divorced on grounds of adultery they marry. If two want to marry and their they have previously been married but their spouse is dead they may marry. That's the grounds for marriage in the Bible.
And there are no lost books of the Bible. There are some writings
by uninspired people that some have claimed should have been in the bible
but it is very evident as you read them that they are contradictory and
not of the quality of the 66 books making up the Bible.
Q. It has always been said that Jesus dranked wine so some
people tell me that it is ok to drink not only wine but other drinks as
well. I arguement is that when Jesus turned water into wine it was Holy
Wine not the wine we have today to get people drunk. Also @ the Last Supper
when he said " the fruit of the vine" was not this like grape juice and
wine not fermated ?
A. As you know the New Testament was written in Greek and they
did not have different words as do we to show the difference in intoxicating
wine and regular grape juice. Usually it is easy to determine which
it is from reading a passage. In Habakkuk 2:15 a woe is pronounced
on one who gives his neighbor to drink. Surely then we know that
our Lord would not have given or endorsed something upon which there is
a woe. We are told in Proverbs chapter 23 verse 31 not to even look
on the intoxicating kind of wine let alone drink it. Who could believe
that Jesus would turn water into that which is condemned, a woe placed
upon it and which in general makes men act like fools? It seems rather
obvious that it was good fresh grape juice which also may be translated
as wine. And you are correct when he speaks of "the fruit of the
vine" as it being grape juice. Fermentation suggest that which has
undergone some kind of process. I know that arguments are made that
they could not have had any way of preserving grape juice in those days
but those who argue this simply demonstrate their ignorance of the customs
and abilities that they had back there. Indeed they did have ways
of preserving juice and keeping it from fermenting.
Q. What does the Bible say about strip clubs? also what does the Bible say about posing nude for art or any other reason? both of these in relation to both the strippers and models and those people looking at them. Thank you and God Bless!
A. At Galatians 5:19-21 mention is made of the works of the
flesh. Listed among them are such things as lewdness, uncleanness,
fornication and adultery and it also says "such like" and then it says
those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
Q. What does the bible say about signing a “contract” with your church? Our Pastor and Leaders want us to sign a paper that if we are living a life that is not Christ Like we will be repremended. If we smoke, go to a party, etc. Is this of God?
A. The procedure you outline sounds very much like the Pharisees.
When we confess Christ as mentioned in Romans 10:12 this is a verbal commitment
that we are going to live for Christ and do those things that he would
want us to do. Signing contracts and the like are man made laws.
Our pattern is to be the teaching of the Bible and follow its requirements
and what Jesus expects us to do. I believe you might be helped if
you would enroll in our free Bible correspondence course found at this
site. We would be happy to study the Bible with you by this means.
Q. Who was the disciple that Jesus discerned had the devil in him and how many times did he have the devil? What scriptures can that be found?
A. Luke 22:1 and John 13:2 indicate that the devil put it in
the heart of Judas to betray Jesus. I do not think these scriptures
teach that the devil personally dwelled in him but simply placed the idea
in the mind of Judas.
Q. How many (number) of crowns can you receive in heaven and name them?
A. The apostle Paul said he expected to receive a crown of life and not he but all those who loved the appearing of our Lord. Jesus said to be faithful and we would receive a crown of life. That should be enough for anyone don't you think?
Q. How many number of times the word THANKS or related words appear in the bible
A. 73 and 67 related words.
Q. Brother Cole,
If a husband gives his wife a sexually transmitted disease, would that be considered adultery? The wife was 100 % faithful.
Thank you for your time.
A. I would say that it is extremely likely that he has committed
adultery. The only possible exception would be if he had the disease
before they were married then of course it would indicate that he had been
guilty of fornication.
Q. My daughter told me her French teacher friend married her
first cousin.
Her teacher doesn't have a problem with it at all.
Isn't that incest?
I don't like to judge but I think of it as incest.
Is there any mention in the bible about marrying first cousins or
cousins.
I believe that type of behavior is bestiality. Am I correct
in saying so?
Thank You,
A. There are several marriage laws related to incest found in Leviticus chapter 18. I don't believe any of them forbid the marriage of cousins. In secular law most states permit marriage of such. The science of genetics may enter here and likely it might be unwise from this standpoint.
And yes there is mention of cousins marrying in the Bible. Isaac married Rebekah and she was a cousin according to Genesis 24:15.
It would not be bestiality for according to Leviticus 18:23 that
is mating with an animal.
Q. Where do you find the scripture in the bible about the good
die young?
Thank You
A. There is no such scripture.
Q. I was wondering as the case of king saul in which his sin led the holy spirit to be taken from him can this happen to believers today if we continue to sin against God ? And we are truly saved?
A. Yes. Notice Hebrews 6:4-6. These Hebrews were Christians and were partakers of the Holy Spirit but they are warned that they can fall away to such a degree that they cannot be renewed to repentance. Then at Hebrews 10:26-27 there is a warning about sinning willfully and there remains no more sacrifice for sin.
Q. I was reading in the book of Genesis where Lot's daughters
lay with
their father. Apparently he was so drunk that he didn't know when
they
came in and when they left. If he was that drunk, how could he possibly
get them pregnant?
Thank you so much for you time.
Blessings,
A. It must be remembered that events of this nature are presented
in a very condensed form, that is we do not have all the details.
But evidently while Not drunk to the point of passing out but to the point
that he could not discern who it was to whom he had approached or
what he was doing. I have counseled with women who became impregnated
they said while they were so drunk they didn't know what they were doing
and I suppose the same thing could happen with a man impregnating someone.
Q. WHAT ABOUT THOSE WHO ARE NOT AROUND WATER? TO BE BAPTIZED..
A. This would be extremely hypothetical because man can not
live without water and at least two-thirds of the world is water.
Just as Jesus said in John 7:17 that if any wills to do the will of God
he shall know of the doctrine, if one truly wanted to obey the Lord
and thus come in contact with the saving blood of Jesus the way would be
provided. Questions like this often indicate an effort to try and
avoid a plain command of God and Jesus plainly said that he that believes
and is baptized shall be saved (Mark 16:16).
Q. So it is acceptable in God's eyes for two people from different
races to marry? What about Babylon and I know the Bible addresses
"being differently yoked" on a standpoint of animals and plants but does
that apply to people too? OR is it all a "society" thing?
A. As stated, the Bible does not address this matter. As to
Babylon, I suppose you are refering to the confusion of tongues as mentioned
in Genesis 11. That is not dealing with marriage and one would have
to "read" a lot into the text to suggest that it does. As to the
passage about being yoked, I guess you are talking about 2 Corinthians
6:14. If you read it closely you will note that it is talking about
Christians not marrying or being yoked up with unbelievers. There
is no mention of race. Don't make the Bible teach what it does not
teach. It is said in Numbers 12:1 that Moses married an Ethiopian
woman (evidently from a different race) and those who objected were rebuked).
It seems clear that concerning marriage that it is one man one woman for
life. If both are otherwise qualified for marriage race is not a
consideration. It would be a "society thing" in that some in society
might not approve.
Q. What does the Bible say about Interracial marriages?
A. It says nothing about interracial marriages.
Q. Dear Sir:
I am a divorced single mother. My ex-husband
not only committed adultery but also laid down an ultimatum for reconciliation
that was perverse and debase. After much prayer and scriptual reflection
on my part, we divorced. After being alone for over three years,
I began to ask God if he could send me someone in my life..and he did.
Only, not without obstacles or rather obstacle. I love this man and
knows he feels the same way, however he was raised to believe that marriage
to a divorced woman is strictly forbidden--overlooking the passages is
Matthew for that of 1 Corithians. This man, himself, does not believe
as his parents (obviously so or he wouldn't have dated me). Very
shortly he will be confronting them face to face in hopes of gaining at
least some quasi-approval for his relationship with me. Periodically,
he turns to me for advise. My father is also a minister in the church,
but when I ask him questions, the concern in his voice and eyes is too
much to bear.
So, besides the two verses in Matthew (5: 31-31, 19:9)
are there any covert or indirect scriptual references to provide more insight
on scriptual divorce? For example, I remember studying the audiences
(besides the obvious universal audience) for the four gospels at Freed-Hardeman
University--unfortuantely that was a long time ago and I don't have any
of my old textbooks or notes. Was there something going on in the
Corinthian Chuch ( i.e. unscriptual marriages) that would cause Paul to
mention the marital unfaithullness?
I know the obstacle is a HUGE one and have been continually
praying for truth and understanding for all of us. Any prayers you
can offer on my behalf would be much appreciated.
Thanks
A. The problem of marriage and divorce and remarriage is an
old one. Some brethren want to go beyond what the Lord said and declare
there is no reason for divorce and thus there can be no remarriage unless
ones spouse dies. Other brethren take a loose view but it would seem
the passage you cited from Matthew 5 and the passage in Matthew 19:9 should
answer. Based upon what you have written you appear to have the right
to remarry you do not give the status of this one that you are contemplating
marrying but if he is qualified by the Bible to marry then your conscience
can rest easy. It, of course was God's intention that marriage be
one man and one woman for life but he does give the one cause for braking
the marriage and he does permit the innocent party to remarry and while
the parents of the man you mention are no doubt sincere (and I have run
across others who hold their view and are sincere) they are still binding
where God has not bound. My prayers are with you and I urge you to
seek God's guidance and counsel and follow what God's word on this matter.
Q. How many times is the word divorce mentioned in the bible?
A. Look it up in a good concordance and count them. We
try to avoid trivia questions.
Q. I got so many answers in the bible.but i having one critical doubt about TRINITY.i study this subject but exact answer not come.
1) In the bible many scriptures says our god is trinity and eternal god.My doubt is if god is trinity in the origin of eternal or later one god may seperated/divided as three personalities for some region or purpose.
2) in Luke 12:20 Jesus says the rich man
"They ask your soul".Who are THEY in this verse.
A. The Bible clearly teaches there is one God but there are
three personalities. Note that at Genesis 1:26 the plural pronoun
is used "Let us make man in our image. God the Father is the architect,
God the Son is the builder and God the Holy Spirit is the revealer.
My Bible in Luke 12 does not read "They ask your soul" rather God
said that his soul was required and it is revealed that man does not take
his earthly wealth with him. One's soul is worth more than all the
wealth of the world.
Q. I am pastor in guntur state ap in india about last
10 years. i got so many answers in the bible.but i having one critical
doubt about SUFFERING PEOPLE.i study this subject but exact answer not
come.
In bible many scriptures says God allow people to suffer some
specific purpose. How ever the people will suffering the result is they
know about god and gain eternal life. This is good.
1) My doubt is about people who are dead while
accidentally they yet not saved or baptized.what about god plan for these
people. OUR god says only baptized in christ are saving.
Gospel is fully preached now a days around the world but
world consist of so many religious and athesists. WHAT ABOUT THESE PEOPLE?
IS GOD GIVING ANY CHANCE TO THESE PEOPLE FOR SAVING IN CHRIST AFTER THEIR
DEATH. 2) Are peoples dead while accidents are GODs plan or their Mistakes?
3)Are muslims Satan people they prayed Allah is god. 4)Other religious/Faith
people also Cure their deceases and fruitful their lives and so much RICH
also. THIS IS GIVING TO THEM IS OUR ONLY GOD JESUS NOR SATAN NOR
WITH THEIR OWN WORKS?.
A. The Bible tells us that all who do not obey the gospel of Jesus
Christ will suffer vengeance and everlasting destruction (2 Thessalonians
1:7-9). As for why people suffer sometimes it is to the glory of
God like Job, sometimes it is as a consequences of sin like Adam.
Q. Are there scripture backing up interracial relationships
such as marriage? How about Levitcus
19? Thank you kindly. Loving you in Christ, Candy Breakfiedl
A. I am unable to find anything in Leviticus 19 that condemns
an interracial relationship such as marriage. The main thing that
is important if a man and woman determine to get married is not what race
they are but do they meet the Biblical qualifications for marriage.
Q. Do you believe that if someone commits suiside that they
go to hell?
A. First it should be remembered that God alone is the judge
as to who goes to Heaven or to Hell. Self preservation is likely
the strongest instinct in man and if one takes his own life it is quite
possible that he is without his senses. Yet at the same time one
might give his life for another and Jesus said at John 15:13, "Greater
love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."
Q. I am pastor in guntur state about last 10 years. i
got so many answers in the bible.but i having one critical doubt about
AFTER DEATH and SOUL.i study this subject but exact answer not come.
In Luke 16:19-31 Lazarus and rich man story , they both are
died and lazarus is in paradise and rich man is in hades. They both see
with each other and lazarus feeling comfort at abrahams bosom and rich
man feel very torment in hades. Bible says so many times dead is asleep
with out dreams.it is unconscious until second coming of jesus.also Ecclesiastes
9:5,6 tells They do not remember Earth relations and anything. But Lazarus
and Rich man both are fully conscious and finding each other.also rich
man asks save his brothers.all things are remember him. Also rich man feels
thristy and ask water.with out body how is physical feeling. Lazarus is
taken with angels to paradise but Who are taken rich man to hades.why here
silent about him.who are taken him. In Thess 5:23 "Now may the God
of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul,
and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ."
Here scripture says that spirit, soul, body are distinct each other.
In Ecclesiastes 12:7 says body return to dust and spirit will return to
god who gave it. What about SOUL.why here silent this word. where it can
return or goes.here also silent the word rightious and unrightious(sinners)
Above lazarus and rich man story they both died at a very time they still
exists in paradise and hades. That is their soul or spirit.
(or)
Their SOUL is in paradise and hades and
their SPIRIT is return to god at a very time after death.
A. Ecclesiastes 9:5 must be understood in the light of
Ecclesiastes 12:7. There is no knowledge in the grave for the part
that knows does not go to the grave. If we understand "know not anything"
to bo be unrestricted then the dead would not have any more reward either.
But Abraham looked for reward according to Hebrews 11:9,10 and 16.
The part of man that knows does not go to the grave.
Q. I am pastor in guntur state ap in india about
last 10 years. i got so many answers in the bible.but i having one critical
doubt about SOUL.i study this subject but exact answer is not come.
according to Ecclesiastes 12.7 the body is return to dust.and the spirit
go to god who gave it.but what about soul.why here silent the word Soul.
Where it goes actually?.God (or) Heaven or Hell.
In the Luke 16.19-31 Lazarus and Rich man story. When both are die.lazarus
will go with angels but rich man is silent.Who brought him to paradise.
They both are seen in paradise. That is they SOUL or SPIRIT.What about they
are not going to god at that same time. Please explin
me the difference about SOUL and spirit.Where they both actually exist
after death?.
A. Ecclesiastes 12:7 is telling us that the part of man that
is made of dust returns to the dust but not the spirit. According
to 1 Thessalonians 5:23 man is made up of body, soul and spirit. According
to Daniel 7:15 the knowing part of man is the conscious part of man.
This is also seen in 1 Corinthians 2:11. The conscious part of man
goes back to God. At Acts 9:36 mention is made of how Dorcas
died and they showed coats that she had made while she was still with them.
Her body was still there but something had ceased to be with them.
What was it? It was her soul or spirit. Souls of the righteous go
to God and are placed in a place of Paradise to await the judgment.
Souls of the wicked go to God and are placed in a place of torment according
to Luke 16 to await the judgment.
Q. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BIBLE VERSE OR VERSES?
A. I do not know that I have one special favorite but I draw a great
deal of strength from Psalm 1, Psalm 23, Psalm 34 and Psalm 37.
Q. Is it wrong to mix races?
A. I am not sure I understand your question. If you are
asking about a mixing of the races in marriage if both parties meet the
Bible qualifications for marriage I know of nothing in the Bible forbidding
such. If you are asking about integration of schools and mixing races
in this way I would give you the same answer.
Q. what do an armorbearer do what help can i get as references. thank you
A. In Bible times an armorbearer was a man who walked with a soldier carrying his weapons like sword or armor. There are several references made to such in the Old Testament especially in the books of first and second Samuel.
Q. what is the role of mother's in a church why do they have mother's board
A. There is no official role for mother's in the church. Mothers function in the home where they love and care for and train their children and care for their husband. The Bible does not speak of a mother's board in a church. The church is to be overseen by elders. Some kind of organization like a mother's board of which you speak is out of order in the church.
Q. IVE BEEN TRING TO CONTACT SOMEONE ABOUT THIS
MY SINGLE PASTOR WAS DATING A DIVORCED LADY, A MEMBER OF OUR TOLD
HIM HE SHOULD NOT BE SEEING A DEVOIVED WOMEN; SHE HAS BEEN DIVORCED FOR
5 YEARS, NO KIDS, DON’T KNOW WHY SHE GOT DIVORCED, ALL I KNOW IS SHE IS
A CHRISTIAN WOMEN NOW. CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT
THIS? I NEED HELP ON THIS
IF YOU CANT HELP ME CAN YOU GET ME IN CONTACT WITH SOMEONE WHO CAN?
IM A LEADER IN THE CHURCH AND KNOW THIS IS GOING TO COME UP, I NEED
HELP FINDING THE ANSWER IN THE BIBLE?
THANK YOU
GOD BLESS
A. The basic answer to your question would be found in Matthew 19:9. If the divorced woman (and it is a big if) put away her husband for fornication she would be able to marry again and there would be no wrong in someone who is qualified for marriage (such as never having been married before or whose spouse was dead or whose spouse was put away for fornication) dating such a one But there is also such a thing as good judgment and expediency. More often than not a congregation would not accept leadership from one whose spouse had been married and divorced or vice versa. This being true the preacher would be well advised to find a different congregation where the background of such matters is not known.
Q. At our Bible Study last night, a question came up about the old testament saints. After dying on the cross, did Jesus go to Paridise and pick up the old testament saints and take them to heaven or did their spirit go there directly when they died? We thought that everyone had to go through Jesus Christ to get into heaven. Thanks
A. Thank you for a very interesting question that provokes a good bit of thought and study. We do not have a lot of information about the matters of which you ask but putting together a few scriptures we can get some ideas.
There is no doubt but that when Jesus died he went to Paradise for he told the thief they were going. However people like Moses and Elijah were already in a state of glory for you will remember that they appeared with the Lord on the mountain of transfiguration (Matthew 17:3). According to Hebrews 11 the great people of faith mentioned there did not see the fullfillment of God's promises but they embraced them by faith (see verse 13) and according to verse 16 God has prepared a city for them. They achieved this through Christ which they saw by the eye of faith but it is reality for us as noted at verse 40. We have now received the kingdom which cannot be shaken and so according to Hebrews 12:28 we are to serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. Everyone must go through Jesus to be saved and every animal sacrifice they made was a reminder by faith of the blood that would ultimately be shed by God's son for the sins of the world for the blood of bulls and goats could never take away sin I hope this helps in your inquiry.
Q. HOW MANY TIMES DOES THE WORD ASK APPEAR IN THE BIBLE?
A. You may look the word up in a concordance and count the number of times it appears.
Q. Will you explain Acts Chapter 8 verses 4 thru 10
Thank you
A. The passage you ask about basically explains itself. It is a historical narrative telling of what happened after a persecution broke out against Christians--they went everywhere preaching the word. Phillip the evangelist went to Samaria during this period. He had great success and he encountered a man called Simon who used sorcery to deceive people but Simon was converted like all the others he believed and was baptized. But the old temptation to have a following came back to him and he sought to purchase the gift of God with money. That's what the passage says.
Q. Was woman created is Gods image the same as man? One person in our church said woman was created in man image. What is womans place in the church.
Thank you
A. When the Bible speaks of man being created in God's image it is speaking of that part of man that never dies (the soul). It is also speaking of the human race in general which includes male and female (woman has a soul just as man which will never die but spend eternity either with God or Satan depending on the choices made in life). Woman was taken from man (his rib) to be his helper and companion. She was not made in his image God was the one who made her and he made her from the rib of Adam. She is to be the helper, supporter and companion of man. Her work in the church is that which God has prescribed for her. She is not permitted to preach or usurp authority over the man but there is a role for her to perform. Some examples of what a woman can do in the church would be the mother and grandmother of Timothy of which you can read in the Bible and the woman Priscilla who is mentioned in the book Of Acts.
Q. What is a preacher?
A. One who preaches.
Q. I first just want to say that I am glad that I found this site and thank you for your time. I have been wondering about my question for a long time but have not been able to find the answer. Hope that you can help. I met this great guy and we seem to get along great but I am white and he is part white and black also he is 25 and I am only 19. First off my father does not believe in blacks and whites being together but I was wondering what the bible said about it. Also I was wondering if the age is a problem with the bible. If it is wrong then what is he suppose to do when he is both black AND white. Also if the bible said that it is okay then would it be wrong to start a relationship with him just because my father does not like the cross race. I am very confused and would not want to further the relationship if it is wrong even though he seems like he could be the one. I hope that you can help me with my question and thank you.
A. The Bible does not address the race issue when it comes to marriage. In God's sight there is no racial distinction, neither bond nor free, Jew or Gentile. If both parties qualify by Bible standards to marry then there is no prohibition though it may be wise to consider cultural backgrounds and feelings of family members as you mentioned. As for age difference again the bible does not set such qualifications as long as both parties are Biblically qualified to be married and perhaps I should mention these. If neither party has been married they are of course qualified for marriage, if they have been married but their former spouse is dead then they are qualified for marriage and if they have been married and the former spouse was divorced for the cause of fornication then they are permitted to marry. I hope this helps and thank you for consulting our site
Q. How many times is the word 'elder' mentioned in the bible? is it only in reference to to God? and should a person not be refered to as an elder ?
A. If one is an elder why shouldn't he be referred to as one? The word elder is used sometimes in the Bible concerning those who have the oversight of the church and other times as simply an older person. It is much more important to be concerned about what the teaching of the Bible is than as to how many times a word may appear.
Q. I am thinking of getting remarried next year and i come from the united kingdom and would possibly like to know if i can get remarried in a church of england church as i am a christian but ime not to sure if my intended wife to be is or has been christened at all...should this make any difference in me being able to remarry in a church??
The other thing i wondered about is to do with the fact i divorced my ex-wife for committing adultery, is this another possible sticking point for our wedding arrangements...is this seen as bad point in a failed marriage in the eyes of the church??
What would your views on these things i ask you?
A. I am unable to speak for the Church of England as I do not know their policies about such matters. As for the other matters you ask about if your former wife committed adultery and you divorced her for that reason you are qualified to remarry according to Matthew 19:9. And as a personal note it seems to me you need to get to know your intended wife much better if at this point you don't even know whether she is a Christian or not and incidentally being christened is not what makes one a Christian. If you would know more about this matter and how to become a Christian I encourage you to enroll in our free Bible correspondence course.
Q. is it permissible to eat a blood of an animal or forbidden? will it affects ones salvation?
A. Inspired men at Acts 15:20 said that the Gentiles who had recently accepted Christianity were not to eat blood. The answer is no it is not permissible to eat the blood of an animal it is forbidden. And yes to violate a plain stipulation of God's word would affect ones salvation.
Q. My parents go to a church where a lot of the people would like to get rid of the preacher, but because of written by laws, they can not legally have a vote on him for another year. The preacher has done many things that have caused several problems in the church. Some of the things this preacher?? has done is: does not visit the sick, says he will visit and then never shows up, continually goes places with the church secretary and has caused an lot of talk in the church and outside the church from people that have seen them. Recently, someone in the congregation wrote a nasty letter to another member in the church. They went to the preacher with this letter and he dedicated an entire message on Sunday morning telling what a bad person this writer was. He said that he was the Shepherd of the congregation and if he found out for sure who wrote the letter that they would be going to the "mutton factory". My dad is an elder in the church and has tried to talk to him about all of the above things and he has said that he will not listen to the elders and that he will do as he pleases. There have been people that have written him letters trying to talk to him, because they have tried to talk to him in person and he won't listen. He told the congregation to keep the letters coming because they were quit entertaining. These are just a few things that have gone on, but my question to you is this: Is there any scripture that can be used to get him out of the church? I don't feel that he is concerned about the best interest of the church, or he would leave on his own. He says that he will not leave. I think that Satan is setting back laughing at him and the church and is really enjoying all the problems that the church is having. This is the church I grew up in and it breaks my heart to see all of the turmoil that is going on. I have searched the Bible and cannot come up with anything. There are several verses in 1 Timothy, but I don't think they can present those verses and get him out. Please help me if you can.
A. I have been preaching nearly 50 years and at the various congregations that I have served there has been a written agreement that the church or the preacher would give the other a 90 day notice if there was a determination for a change. Elders have the oversight of the congregation. They are responsible for who teaches and who fills the pulpit and so i do not understand the stipulation you mention about being unable to legally remove him. If those in control stop writing his check I would dare say he would leave! The books of 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy and Titus do indeed give the qualifications of a preacher the primary ones being that he "preach the word" and be an example. If your preacher is not doing that he needs to be removed from the pulpit and elders have that right and that authority. As to the criticism of his not visiting the sick. He is under no more obligation to visit the sick that the individual Christians who make up the congregation but he does have a responsibility and he ought not say he is going to do that and then not keep his word for that makes him a liar and we know what the Bible says about them.
Q. I have two daughters (both have never been married). The youngest, (age 27) is engaged to a black man, (age 30). My husband and I fully support this marriage. We are Baptist and both our daughter and the man to whom she is engaged have been saved, baptized and joined our church. We believe he will be an inspirational leader in our family. He seems to have a strong faith.
The problem is my oldest daughter, (37). She has always been in a sinful relationship living with a man without promise of marriage. She suffer from bi-polar depression and may be a little jealous that her sister is accomplishing what she has been unable to accomplish in her life. She states that her sin (living with a man) is no worse than the sin of her sister marrying a black man. She is condemning her sister and says it is against God's principles. She does not go to church, even though I feel she reads her bible. I think she has a very distorted vision of the bible because of the situation she lives in. Her boyfriend isolates her from her family.
I would very much appreciate your opinion and verses that would support your opinion.
A. I am very sorry for the family difficulty you are having. If your youngest daughter and the man to whom she is engaged (race has nothing to do with it) are eligible for marriage by Bible standards (and it appears they are) then you should support the marriage. There is no sin involved in your daughter marrying a black man, and the Bible which presents God's standards does not forbid such so your oldest daughter is mixed up as to what God's standards are. I just hope that she is getting the meds that she needs for her problems then perhaps she can see more clearly what the bible does truly teach. Jealousy is a terrible thing.
Q. Is there any specific qualifications one must have to be to baptize someone?
A. There are none that I have ever read.
Q. I am seeking some help in a matter that maybe you can help me in. Can a minister that has committed adultry, resigned his church remarried and repented and came back to God ever pastor again?
A. No. Even if he repented of the adultery this did not give him the right to remarry and thus living in that sinful condition of course he would not be qualified to lead.
Q. Is it good for preachers to always talk about the devil?
A. What do you mean "always"? Certainly preachers ought to preach about a lot of things and not just get "hung up" on one topic. On the other hand to be forewarned is to be forewarned and the devil is our arch enemy. We couldn't preach about Jesus without preaching about his encounter with the devil. The apostle Paul along with other writers warn about the devil so if we are following their example if we preach about him. Certainly there are other topics that must be preached about but a preacher is doing his job when he warns about the devil and his actions.
Q. Where is the scripture that will back up a girl getting out pregnant out of wed lock are suppose to go before the church and ask for forgiveness? Is there any scriptures that will cover this issue?
A. Consider James 5:16 and 1 John 1:9.
Q. Thanks for responding. I have read those scriptures, but it doesn't say that you are to go before the church. I understand about confessing our faults one to another, but that doesn't necessary mean go before the church, do you agree?
A. Yes, I agree that we are not to go before the church with every sin that we commit. If I have an evil thought or commit some other sin known only between me and God I should go to him and confess it in prayer. If I sin against a brother or sister I need to go to them acknowledge the sin and seek God's forgiveness. But if a sin is public and known by many, such as the sin you mentioned previously, then it would seem more expedient to go before the congregation than to go around to each individual member and after all in the case you mentioned not only has God been sinned against but reproach has been cast on the whole church. We are not given specific information about these matters in the Bible but it would seem that it is expedient that the confession and repentance of a sin should be as public as the sin committed.
Q. Hi, I was wondering, how many times and in what context
does the bible mention covering naked people? I did a quick search
and found that this topic starts in Genesis and the last reference is in
Revelation. I wonder are most of these occasions associated with
covering nakedness?
My second question is that it has become so acceptable to people
to see men and women wearing practically nothing, do you think that there
is any way to find a consensus or guide or rule in the bible regarding
nudity and nakedness, and do you think that our society suffering our current
level of sexual immorality and perversion is connected in any way to this
casual attitude that people have of showing thier nakedness? I have
noticed just in my lifetime that what used to be unacceptable 10 years
ago is now considered acceptable in the world. I appreciate your answer
and hope to correspond with you again.
A. Yes, I think most of the time the passages you mention are dealing with that, usually it can be easily determined by reading the context. And yes, ignoring what God has said on these matters has contributed to the immorality and perversion so prevalent but it is not limited to just these matters. With most people there is no final absolute authority in anything. An attitude of do as you please or do whatever seems right to you prevails Such a spirit contributes to lawlessness in general. I pray the time will come when it will be recognized that God's Word is true and the final authority in both doctrinal and moral matters.

Q. Wow, thank you! Can you e-mail me your sight name.
I just went to Google.com and typed in ask a preacher, and sent my e-mail
out to a bunch of pastors, preachers, and Christian teachers. I listen
to Christian radio on my way to work. Often I listen to Love Worth
Finding w/ Adrian Rogers, and he has been preaching on the rapture.
I tried to find it in the Bible and couldn't. They informed me that
rapture is NOT in the Bible just like the word Trinity is NOT in the Bible.
Anyway, I'm sure your free course would really be so helpful to me.
I'm confused about a lot of things. I didn't think it
was necessary to be baptized to have eternal life, but obviously you feel
otherwise. I thought and found evidence from
Romans 10:9
That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe
in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
And that baptism was not a requirement for salvation. I feel
that all believers should be baptized, but don't feel that it is necessary.
If I gave my heart to Jesus and repented and was killed tonight, but was
not baptized I feel that I would still be with Him forever. Just
as all of the Jewish customs, food, ceremonies, and festivals that the
Jews practiced faithfully and we do not is not giving us eternal life anymore
than baptism. I could be baptized tonight and still continue to walk
in sin. I feel that baptism is just an outward symbol of the Lord
and his acceptance, and many of the followers did this publicly in the
NT to show they believed in Jesus. John was baptizing before Jesus
died. How did those people die in Christ as Christ was not yet dead?
I'm sure your study could help me with these questions.
Maybe this study will help me understand otherwise. Thanks
again, and if you could e-mail me your sight it would be so greatly appreciated.
A. Just now, let me make a few observations concerning the passage you cite at Romans 10:9. If this passage stood alone in the New Testament we could, of course, infer that these are the two conditions for salvation but it does not stand alone because there are similar pairings of items needed for salvation like repentance and baptism in Acts 2:38 and faith and baptism in Mark 16:16. Any one of these pairings does not exclude the other conditions that are mentioned. Faith is omitted in one of the pairings, repentance is mentioned in only one, confession in only one and baptism in two but all alike are commanded and all alike are necessary.
Thus in the New Testament faith, repentance, confession and baptism all have the same relationship to salvation "unto" it or "pointing toward it".
I will not spend a lot of time just now dealing with the baptism of John the Baptist as you will learn of it in the course we offer but please note Acts 19:4-5 and you will see that John's baptism was a baptism of preparation getting people ready for the coming of Christ and once he came then people were baptized in the name of the Lord.
It is also interesting to note that in every conversion, given in
detail, in the book of Acts they all heard the word of God, they all believed
in Jesus Christ, they all repented of their sins and though not mentioned
that all confessed their faith in Christ it can properly be inferred and
all of them were baptized into Christ. That's still the way we become
Christians. These also are matters that will be discussed in the
course. Thank you for your interest and I hope you do pursue the
free course of study. At any time you have further questions please
feel free to contact us.
Q. what are gods views about a mans actions toward his wife if the man truley believes in his heart and soul she is being dishonest and committing adultry ???
A. If a man knows these things God's word says she may be put away by divorce. But there is a difference in believing something and knowing something. Men have sometimes believed things only to discover they were wrong even though they strongly believed them and felt deep in their heart they were right. The apostle Paul is a prime example. He truly thought he was doing God a service when he persecuted the church but he was wrong. You say you truly believe this matter but do you know for an absolute fact?
Q. I am looking for scripture reference that addresses qualities that should be present, or the lifestyle a Christian should present to be a deacon of in the church.
A. The best and most detailed scripture reference would be 1 Timothy chapter 3 verses 8 through 13. Since the word deacon means
